Savory cheese sticks with white cheese – Vegetarian

These savory cheese sticks are perfect as a snack, especially paired with beer, or for sharing with friends. They’re quick to make, stay fresh and tender for several days (though I doubt they’ll last that long!), and require only a few simple ingredients.

Ingredients:

  • 550 g flour
  • 350 g salty white cheese
  • 150 g cold butter
  • 150 g sour cream
  • 3 eggs (2 for the dough, 1 for brushing)
  • Poppy seeds and sesame seeds for topping (you can also use caraway seeds if you like, although I personally don’t prefer them in baked goods)

Preparation:

Grate the white cheese using a coarse grater. Cut the cold butter into small pieces.

In a food processor designed for dough, combine all the ingredients except for one egg and the poppy and sesame seeds, and mix for a few minutes. If you don’t have a food processor, you can easily make the dough by hand, mixing the ingredients together in a large bowl.

Divide the dough into two equal parts. On a floured work surface, dust both the surface and the dough ball with flour, knead it lightly, and roll it out with a rolling pin. The dough sheet shouldn’t be too thin. Using a pastry wheel (if you don’t have one, a knife works just as well), cut the dough into squares, then slice those squares lengthwise into strips, and finally cut the strips in half. Repeat this process until all the dough is used. This amount of dough will make about 70 cheese sticks.

Preheat the oven to 170°C (340°F). Place the cheese sticks on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush each one individually with beaten egg, then generously sprinkle poppy seeds and sesame seeds on top. If you prefer them saltier than what the cheese provides, you can sprinkle a few salt crystals over them. I don’t find it necessary, but some people like them a bit saltier.

Bake them in the preheated oven at 170°C (340°F) for about 20–25 minutes, or until they turn golden brown. I prefer them softer, but if you like them firmer or crispier, you can leave them in the oven a few minutes longer.

Perfect to enjoy with beer, alongside your morning coffee, or as a quick snack at work when you’re in a hurry.

If you try the recipe, let me know how you liked it! 😊
