Delicious and very cute, perfect for Valentine’s Day or for any romantic occasion.
If you use shapes other than hearts and a different dye colour, they become the perfect biscuits for any occasion: Christmas, Halloween, Easter, etc.
Ingredients: (for ~24 biscuits)
- 380 g white flour
- 15 g of baking powder
- 200 g of white sugar
- 240 g butter at room temperature, cut into small cubes
- 1 large egg
- vanilla essence to taste
- red food coloring
* You need heart-shaped dough cutters, of 2 sizes: one large and one smaller.

Preparation:
In a bowl, mix the flour with the baking powder. Leave it aside.
In another bowl, mix the sugar with the butter until the sugar has melted. Add the egg and vanilla essence and continue to mix.

When we obtain a composition like an aerated cream, we add the mixture of flour and baking powder. We incorporate gradually. Halfway through, we start kneading by hand. We knead until all the flour is incorporated and we have obtained a compact dough. Transfer the obtained dough to a work surface and divide it into 3 equal parts. Leave two parts aside.

Put the other third in a bowl, add red colouring, and mix until the color is compact. Add colouring dye until you get the color at the desired intensity. I used natural food colouring, but any pastry food colouring is just as good.
We transfer the red dough to the work surface and with the help of the rolling pin, we stretch it until it is about half a cm (0,5 cm) thick.

Using the small cutter, cut out the red hearts. Transfer to a tray or to an aluminum foil.
After finishing cutting all the dough, put that tray with the red hearts in the freezer for ~ 30 minutes.

While the red hearts are in the freezer, roll out the uncolored remaining dough with the rolling pin, also into 0.5 cm thick sheets. Cut hearts with the help of the large cutter. When half an hour has passed, take the red hearts out of the freezer.
On each big heart, press a small red heart in the middle. Proceed like this until you have shaped all the biscuits.

Turn on the oven and heat it to 180 degrees.
Add the biscuits to the pan (I baked several rounds of 6 biscuits in one pan) taking care to leave enough space between them, so that when they rise during baking, they don’t touch each other and keep their cute shape.
Bake them for a maximum of 8-10 minutes at 180 degrees. You can watch them when they start to brown; it means they are ready. Be careful not to bake them too much because then they will lose their beautiful color.
Let them cool a little (a few minutes) on a flat surface and then we can move them to the serving tray.
